Acoustico-phonetic characteristics of filled pauses in spontaneous French speech: preliminary results

چکیده

In the current analysis we examined the acoustic and phonetic characteristics of filled pauses in spontaneous French speech and their relationship to the prosody of the surrounding context. Two main results emerged : 1) There was no effect of the duration of filled pauses or their sentence location on their F0 patterns or on the differences between the highest and lowest values. 2) There was no relationship between peak-F0 values and the F0 values of filled-pause onsets, but the F0 values of filled-pause onsets and the F0-values of non-marked breath-group onsets were highly similar. The F0 values of filled-pause onsets seem to be stable within the same speaker’s speech. They are speaker-dependent and strongly linked to the physiological, absolute aspects of speech production. It is assumed that filled-pause onset may be used by listeners as a reference for evaluating the speaker’s pitch range.

Characterization of Hesitations Using Acoustic Models

Spontaneous speech is full of hesitations, such as fillers, word cut-offs, repetitions and segmental extensions. Automatic identification of such hesitations has several applications; however, it is a challenging research problem. In this paper acoustic-phonetic properties of hesitation phenomena are explored in order to identify and annotate some of these events in a spontaneous speech corpus ...

Synthesising Filled Pauses: Representation and Datamixing

Filled pauses occur frequently in spontaneous human speech, yet modern text-to-speech synthesis systems rarely model these disfluencies overtly, and consequently they do not output convincing synthetic filled pauses. This paper presents a text-to-speech system that is specifically designed to model these particular disfluencies more efffectively. A preparatory investigation shows that a synthet...

Breath and Non-breath Pauses in Fluent and Disfluent Phases of German and French L1 and L2 Read Speech

In this study we examined the read speech of native and nonnative speakers with respect to pausing details of audible breathing, particularly in disfluent phases. 20 German and 20 French native speakers read the same narrative text in their native (L1) and in their non-native language (L2). Some expected results were confirmed: more frequent pauses and more frequent disfluencies in L2, as well ...

Pauses and hesitations in French spontaneous speech

In traditional terminology, silent and filled pauses are grouped together, whereas hesitation lengthening is put into a separate category. However, while these various phenomena are very often associated, there have been few studies on how they interact. We analyzed an hour of spontaneous speech to show that silent and filled pauses operate in a totally different way, and that contrary to commo...

On filled-pauses and prolongations in european portuguese

This paper reports preliminary results from a study of disfluencies in European Portuguese, based on a corpus of prepared (non-scripted) and spontaneous oral presentations in high school context. We will focus on the contextual distribution and temporal patterns of filled pauses and segmental prolongations, as well as on the way those are rated by listeners. Results suggest that filled pauses a...
